What is that?!! ... Snow Mold on your Lawn. That's What!

Updated: Feb 7

SPRING HAS SPRUNG AND I SERIOUSLY DON’T HAVE TIME, SKILL OR KNOWLEDGE TO MAKE MY LAWN LOOK AMAZING…….

The snow is melting – the yard looks nasty – and stinks - and I really want to get a jump on the lawn this year !

I hate the snow mold, you know the smelly, web like growth on your grass now that the snow has melted

It can be pink or white and smells like a cross between running shoes and an outhouse. It can trigger allergies as well.

Despite the smell, the threat to your lawn is pretty minor.

It’s a FUNGUS ! It happens when the weather warms up quickly after a cold spell. All the freezing and melting creates a pocket of warm moist air between the lawn and the crust of snow above. Like near your sidewalk, boulevard and drive way edges where we have made snow piles all winter.

It’s like it’s own little greenhouse !

To stop it from severely damaging your grass be sure not to walk on it – it will clear up on its own but if it is bothering you – MASK UP - lightly rake and dispose of the webs. Be sure to wash any tools or rakes used to do so.

The biggest and best trick of all to avoid snow mold next season –– be sure to rake any and all leaves and debris that snow mold can attach itself to in the fall.

Now that we’ve covered the ugliest, and smelliest, duties of Spring Clean up be sure to follow our blog for additional tips for an amazing lawn.
